our world is suffering. Can we do something about it?
Imagine this:
"Globally, an estimated 12 billion working days are lost every year to depression and anxiety, costing approximately US$1 trillion per year in lost productivity." - WHO Mental Health Report
The WHO Mental Health Report of 2022 estimates that more than 1 billion people live with a diagnosable mental disorder, contributing to the cost of lost productivity due to absenteeism, presenteeism, and employee turnover. This is huge!
Out of these individuals, only a fraction have access to supporting systems. The workplace plays a significant role in this matter, considering we spend most of our waking time there. Therefore, we need that psychological safety comes first in the workplace. Being yourself as a whole is needed now more than ever.
There are affordable initiatives that organizations can implement. One of them is simply asking people in your proximity how they are doing and how they are holding up. This can have a positive impact on their well-being, as well as your own.
Encourage people to dedicate an hour of their lives every month or so to deep non-work conversations—it will be 50 minutes well spent. Don't talk about work, but rather attune to one another. Take a moment to pause, be still, and listen with intent; it is rejuvenating. With each conversation, seek to discover something new about the person in front of you.
People want to be seen, people want to be heard, and people want to feel.
